Penang Green Summit

Speech by YAB Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang cum Chairman of Penang Green Council for Penang Green Summit Press Conference on 23rd June 2025 at Bilik Gerakan, KOMTAR

Members of the media,
Salam Sejahtera and Salam Penang2030.

It is my honor to welcome all of you to the inaugural press conference of the Penang Green Summit 2025.

On behalf of the Penang State Government and Penang Green Council (PGC), thank you for being here—your presence reflects our shared commitment to a sustainable and resilient future. Today marks not just a media launch, but a new chapter in Penang’s green journey.

The Penang Green Summit 2025 is more than a continuation—it’s an evolution. With the theme “Moving Towards Sustainable Energy,” this summit brings together purpose, partnership, and policy—placing Penang at the forefront of climate leadership and energy transition in the region.

We are living in a time of climate emergency. The facts are stark:

  • 2024 was the hottest year ever recorded, with global temperatures reaching 1.55°C above pre-industrial levels.
  • In our part of the world, climate risks are no longer distant warnings. Rising sea levels, floods, heatwaves, and food security disruptions are already here.

This is no longer just an environmental issue. It’s an economic, social, and public health challenge. And if we fail to act decisively, we risk the very well-being of our current and future generations.

Penang will not wait. We are stepping up.

Since 2011, through PGC, we’ve championed public awareness, green certification, policy advocacy, and industry enablement. Last year, we launched the Penang Energy Framework—a strategic push for clean, secure, and efficient energy, with a strong focus on renewables and energy efficiency.

The Penang Green Summit 2025 is our next step: from planning to doing.

Over two days, we will bring together decision-makers, industry leaders, academics, innovators, and public sector players for high-level dialogue, alignment, and action. As part of the summit, we will also host a Green Gala Dinner, recognizing leaders in sustainability and creating space for industries to exchange ideas, forge partnerships, and explore green solutions.

This is more than a conference. It’s a call to action.

To the industry: we want you to not just participate but to lead.
To academia and civil society: your insights and innovations are crucial.
To investors: the green economy is not just the future—it’s already here.

This summit directly supports Penang2030—our vision for a family-focused, green, and smart state that inspires the nation. But we cannot do it alone. A just and sustainable transition will require leadership from every sector—business, government, civil society, and the people.

Let this summit be a turning point. A moment when Penang not only commits but also implements.

Together, let’s rise. Together, let’s build a greener Penang.

Thank you.
