LAUNCH OF THE PENANG GREEN SUMMIT 2025: PENANG TO SERVE AS REGIONAL HEADQUARTERS FOR SUSTAINABLE ENERGY
MEDIA STATEMENT BY PENANG CHIEF MINISTER YAB TUAN CHOW KON YEOW CUM CHAIRMAN OF THE PENANG GREEN COUNCIL ON 04 JUNE 2025 IN KOMTAR, GEORGE TOWN
Today, I am pleased to officially announce the launch of the Penang Green Summit 2025 – a major evolution from our previous Penang International Green Conference and Exhibition (PGIGCE). This newly rebranded summit marks a significant milestone in our green agenda, as we move towards positioning Penang as a regional headquarters for sustainable energy collaboration and innovation.
The Penang Green Summit 2025 will be held from 31st October to 1st November 2025 at the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre (PWCC). Themed “Moving Towards Sustainable Energy”, the summit will bring together industry leaders, government representatives, academics, and cross-sectoral stakeholders for two days of high-level dialogue, strategic partnerships, and actionable outcomes.
The summit will focus on the most pressing energy challenges of our time, explore cutting-edge technologies, and identify viable pathways toward a resilient, low-carbon future. This reflects Penang’s strong and growing commitment to environmental sustainability and energy transition.
The foundation of this effort was laid with the launch of the Penang Energy Framework (PEF) last year. While the PEF charted our strategic direction for clean, secure, and efficient energy use, the Penang Green Summit 2025 signifies our transition into the implementation phase – where plans are translated into real-world impact. We are now focused on policy alignment, industrial innovation, and community empowerment to drive our shared sustainable transformation.
Sustainability must not be treated as a peripheral goal. It must be central to our development strategy – integrated into our planning, industries, infrastructure, and daily practices. We recognise that the journey ahead is not without challenges, especially in terms of capacity and knowledge gaps. That is why this summit aims to be more than a conference – it will be a platform for fostering readiness, knowledge sharing, and collaboration. It will be a space where ideas become action, and partnerships lead to measurable progress.
The Penang State Government firmly believes that sustainable energy is key to long-term economic growth and environmental stewardship. Our drive to promote clean energy solutions is closely aligned with both Penang2030 and Malaysia’s national low-carbon aspirations. We are committed to leading by example, ensuring that Penang continues to thrive as both a dynamic economic powerhouse and a responsible, future-oriented state.
As such, I call upon all sectors – government agencies, businesses, academic institutions, and civil society – to step forward in support of this green transition. The responsibility to safeguard our environment is a shared one, and the time for bold, collective action is now.
More information on the summit’s programme, speakers, and partner-led initiatives will be shared in the coming months by the Penang Green Council (PGC). I urge all stakeholders to remain engaged and take part in this crucial chapter of our shared sustainability journey. For updates, please follow PGC’s official social media channels.
